This month’s Pinterest project was definitely a labor of love!   I was inspired by this pin on Pinterest (I’m sure you’ve seen it).

So I headed out to gather my supplies and a few days later this is what my doormat looked like:

I ended up only needing 5 – 1x2x8’s and I didn’t use the metal rods.  I decided to use jute rope instead so my total cost was around $18.  I bought a small sample of the paint color I wanted, I bought the primed white wood that was around $2.50 for each piece and I already had the sand paper, paint brush and jute rope.

I decided to use the rope instead of the metal rods because I knew I would never drill the holes perfectly in the center of each piece of wood and since I don’t have any fancy tools, this was the best way to do this project.  Plus, cutting the metal rods seemed like a pain so this was much easier on so many different levels.

I had most of the wood cut at the store.  The smallest they can cut the wood is 12 inches so I had the wood cut into 18 inch pieces (since I needed each piece to be 9 inches).  Then when I got home all I had to do was cut the pieces in half.

I only needed 33 pieces of wood – 9 inches long.  I left off a layer at the bottom of the mat because it started to look too wide so I used less than original plans call for.

Then I drilled my holes, sanded the wood and painted each piece red.

When the paint was dry, I threaded the rope through the holes and tied knots at the top and bottom of each column.  Tip:  Wrap scotch tape around the edges of the jute to make it easy to thread through the holes.  On the end columns, I tied knots after each piece of wood.  This helps when your holes aren’t exactly in the center of the wood.

I’m definitely happy with the way it turned but I would not want to do it again.  And although, it was time consuming I do recommend this project and love the way it looks.  All I’m saying is this door mat better last forever!!

So what do you think?  I would love for you to leave a comment below and don’t forget to link up your Pinterest project HERE.    We want to see how Pinterest has inspired you lately!!

  6. The first thing I thought of was Jenga! So I’ll watch at Goodwill for used Jenga games, that can be repurposed, as I hate saws with a passion and dont want to cut anything, but I dont mind drilling holes. I think I will use real rope though, give it a nautical twist.
