We are flying to  California in a few weeks for my cousins wedding and I have to admit that I’m a little nervous about flying for 8 hours with a 7 month old.  Flying from Virginia Beach to Baltimore has us spoiled because the flight is only 25 minutes.  I’m terrified that Easton is going to cry the entire time which would be a nightmare for us and everyone on the plane.  He is such an easy going baby but I have no idea how he is going to do on plane for 8 hours.

tips for traveling with a baby

I’ve been researching tips for traveling with a baby and these are the most important tips I found:

1. Get to the airport early so you have time to go through security especially if you have formula or breastmilk in your diaper bag.

2. Pack a pacifier (or two) so the baby can suck on something during take off and landing.  You can also feed your baby at this time to help with the pressure on the baby’s ears.

3. Make sure you have toys to keep the baby’s attention.

4. Where your baby in a carrier.  I have an Ergobaby that I love and will definitely be carrying Easton in it so my hands are free when walking through the airport and holding him on the plane.  This also means that I will be wearing comfortable clothes.  No need to dress up while flying across the country.

5. Most importantly, pack your diaper bag with lots of diapers and wipes.  This is probably the most important tip.  Pack your diaper bag with everything you need – blankets, burp cloths, extra clothes, toys, etc.  You never know if you the plane is going to be cool or hot.  And you never know when your little one is going to spit up on you.

And since I love an easy DIY project, I wanted to create a handmade teething ring for Easton to have on the plane.  There are a lot of cheap teething toys at the store but I enjoy making things so this was a fun project I could make for my sweet baby.  And since he is currently chewing on everything, this was just what he needed.

Handmade Teething Toy

Materials needed:

  • 8 – 1 inch wood beads
  • 2 wood teething rings
  • ribbon

Directions:

Step 1:  Cut ribbon to about 20 inches. Thread ribbon through one bead and tie a double knot.  Continue until you’ve added all 8 beads.

Step 2:  Add the two wood teething rings and tie the two ends with a double knot.

That’s it. Woohoo!  Another DIY project that only requires 3 things and is done in two easy steps.

So what did I learn from these 5 tips?

Traveling with a Baby - Diaper Bag

BE PREPARED!  Everything I read said to make sure you are prepared.  Now, obviously it doesn’t take a genius to figure this out.  I will say that my only tip is to pack everything ahead of time.  This is going to be hard for me because I am the queen of procrastinating.

I’m making sure I have plenty of diapers and wipes in my diaper bag and in my suitcase.  Have your diaper bag packed with everything that you might need and more!  You can never have too much stuff in your diaper bag for your little one when traveling.  If in doubt, pack two.

I’ve started stocking up on everything I need already every time I do my weekly grocery shopping at Walmart.  I picked up two packs of Huggies® Little Snugglers and a tub of Huggies® Natural Care Wipes over the weekend.  If you’re shopping for diapers, check out the wide selection of Huggies® Little Snugglers available at Walmart.  These are my go-to diapers because they are designed to help keep baby’s skin clean and healthy.  The Little Snugglers have a GentleAbsorb liner which provides a cushiony layer of protection and I especially love the color-changing wetness indicator so you know when your baby’s diaper is ready to be changed.

I use the Natural Care Wipes for everything!  I love the softer feel and the TripleClean layers that are thick enough to handle any mess.  These are a necessity when traveling even if you don’t have babies.  Throw a pack in your purse now.  You’ll thank me later.

And finally – RELAX!  Take a deep breath and try not to stress.  I’ve realized that if Easton cries, it won’t be the end of the world.  I’m hoping that these 5 tips will help our trip run smoothly but sometimes things just happen.  Babies sense when you are stressed so they are more likely to stay calm if you stay calm.

  1. You couldn’t be more right about number 5!! You just don’t know what can happen when flying with baby. There could be delays or upset bellies and you just cannot predict anything when traveling with a baby. 🙂 Love that teething ring. Thanks so much for sharing, Kara! [client]

  2. Don’t forget to have a change of clothes for yourself…my son threw up all over me on our first flight. Also bring plastic bags for soiled items. Good luck!!!

  3. From my personal exprience I would say take enough diapires for your baby. If the journey is long then take a stroller or car seat. It’s very helpful. Besides foods, medicines and fast aid kit is very essential.
