If you’re a fan of dump cakes, you’re going to love this recipe.  I used cherry and blueberry pie filling to create the most gorgeous dump cake.  I was inspired to create this dump cake recipe for the 4th of July because of the red and blue fruit but after taking one bite, I’ve decided that this is the perfect dessert for every holiday, cookout, family gathering and more!

How to Make Dump Cake

First, you’ll need two cans of pie filling, yellow cake mix, and butter.  I also like to add sliced almonds or chopped walnuts to the top of my dump cakes but this optional.

Now, for the fun part!  This cake is called dump cake for a reason.  All we have to do is dump the pie filling in a greased  9×13 baking dish. I like to pour the fruit in stripes across the dish but you can also gently swirl the fruit together with a spoon. Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the fruit. Slice butter into 1/2 tablespoons and distribute evenly over cake mix.

Bake the dump cake in the oven for 40-45 minutes or until brown and bubbly.  Serve this crowd-pleasing dessert warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Dump Cake Variations

Not a fan of cherries or blueberries?  No worries!  Just swap one or both with your favorite fruit combination.  The best thing about making dump cake is you can’t mess it up.  All you need is two cans of fruit.  It can be the same or two different types. Here are a few that we’ve tried:

  • Peach Dump Cake – If you love peaches, use two cans of sliced peaches (undrained).  You could use one can of sliced peaches and one can of blueberry, blackberry or strawberry pie filling.  Want to use fresh fruit?  Replace canned fruit for 4 cups of fresh or frozen fruit.
  • Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake – Replace the blueberries with a can of undrained, crushed pineapples.
  • Apple Cranberry Dump Cake – Use one can of apple pie filling and one can of whole cranberry sauce
  • Berry Dump Cake – Use 2 cans berry pie filling or 4 cups fresh/frozen berries to create a delicious berry dump cake.
