Aren’t those the best kind of craft projects?  Sometimes I plan out the perfect craft in my head and when it’s finished, it looks like total crap.  Then when I don’t plan on working on a craft and just put something together, that turns out great.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Anyways, want to make a fun DIY Cake Topper?  You only need a few materials and your next cake can look just as festive.  Next time I’m going to add the person’s name to personalize it.

We were celebrating my friend Shannon’s birthday last week and I wanted to decorate her cake with something fun and festive.  I quickly looked through my stash of craft supplies and was able to make this cute DIY cake topper in less than 10 minutes.

Materials:

  • coordinating washi tape and/or scrapbook paper
  • scissors
  • letter stickers
  • wooden skewers
  • double-sided tape

Directions:

Step 1: If you are using scrapbook paper, cut into 3/4 inch strips.  You could use all scrapbook paper or all washi tape depending on what you have.  I used both washi tape and scrapbook paper.

Step 2:  Wrap pieces of washi tape and/or scrapbook paper around wooden skewer.  Adhere scrapbook paper with double sided tape.  Cut at different lengths.

Step 3:  Add letters.

Step 4:  Cut skewers to desired length and insert into cake.

There are so many fun ways you can use these cake toppers are they are perfect for every occasion.  I found the pom pom cake topper at Michael’s on clearance.  I think it was 60% off and I was saving it for the perfect occasion.

I still can’t believe how awesome this all came together.  Remember if I can do it, you can totally do it too!  The cake looks almost too good to eat.  Ok maybe that’s pushing it a little but it does make me want to keep  a decorated cake on my countertop.

What would your cake topper say?
