DIY Christmas Candles

I found these fabulous little Christmas candle holders at Michaels and knew I needed to turn them into candles.  I think they’re meant to be votive holders but I decided to fill them with soy wax and make homemade candles out of them.  I’ve been wanting to try making soy candles and this was the perfect time to start.  I made a few for myself and then decided that they make perfect Christmas gifts.  It’s a last minute gift that turned into my favorite DIY Christmas craft.

Want to make a few?  I know Christmas is a week away but you still have time to make a few.  You can always keep them for yourself and make more next year for gifts.

Materials:

  • Christmas ceramic cups, bowls, or votive holders
  • soy wax
  • sauce pan
  • water
  • candle pouring pitcher
  • candle wicks
  • pencil or Popsicle stick
  • liquid candle fragrance or essential oils

Directions:

  • Place metal piece of candle wick flat against the bottom of the jar.  Wrap end of wick around pencil or Popsicle stick until it lays flat on top of jar.
  • Add wax to pouring pitcher.  I didn’t really measure this out.  I think I added about a cup per jar.
  • Add water to sauce pan and place pouring pitcher in sauce pan.  If you don’t have a pouring pitcher, you can use a glass measuring cup with handle or a metal bowl that lays on top of pan.  Heat water and wax over medium heat and stir occasionally until all the wax has melted.
  • Remove from heat and stir in about 1/2 tablespoon of candle fragrance or essential oil to melted wax.  (Feel free to add more fragrance depending on how strong you want the candles to smell)
  • Pour melted wax into candle jars and set aside to solidify – about 3-4 hours.

Now, admire the beautiful candles that you made.  It would be fun to turn all those Christmas mugs into soy candles.  If you’re like me, you can’t ever have too many candles in your life.

Aren’t they gorgeous?!  You’ll have so much fun telling everyone that you made DIY soy candles this holiday season.

I used sugar cookie candle fragrance when making my candles because it seemed perfect for Christmas.  I’m going to make more tomorrow using the peppermint essential oil I have left over from the Peppermint Lip Balm and Hand Scrub I made.

I didn’t have a chance to take pictures while I was making the candles but remember – if I can do it, you can totally do it!  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me or comment below.
