This past weekend I finally finished organizing Connor’s closet and let me just tell you – this was definitely a labor of love!

Organize Your Closet with Wooden Crates

Connor’s closet was a disaster!  I’m so thankful for all the clothes that people have given me but I needed a better system for storing them.  In the past I would just place them in plastic bins and pile them up in his closet.  But that wasn’t working because I couldn’t see what clothes he had.  When it came to time to switch out his clothes for the seasons, I would just dig through the bins, making a huge mess.

Something had to change because this system obviously wasn’t working.  I knew I wanted something that we could take with us when we move since we are military and not living in our forever home so after looking around Pinterest for inspiration, I decided that using wooden crates would be the best solution.  They are easy to move and I love the look of a wooden crate bookshelf.  Plus, they fit perfectly in closets.

Closet Before

Here is a picture of his closet before.  Disaster right?

Wooden Craft Shelves in Closet

Look how much better the wooden crates look!

First, I spray painted the inside of each crate red.  Then I took every single thing out of the closet and placed 6 wooden crates inside along the bottom of the closet.  You can’t see in the picture but there are two more to the left.  2 rows of 6 fit perfectly with extra space if I want to add another row.

And about 5 hours later…

Closet Organized after

This is how his closet looks now with the clothes sorted and folded neatly.

Look at what a difference that is.  This is everything that I had in the bins but now it is organized by size and season.  I hung up coats and collared shirts.  His shoes are lined up on top of the crates.  How awesome does this look now?

All I can say is – this is so much better!  And when it’s time to move, we can take the crates with us and organize any closet.

Closet before and after

Look at what a difference it makes to have nice, clean shelves in a closet instead of trying to use plastic bins.  This is the perfect solution if you’re storing hand-me-downs in your child’s closet like I am.

So what are you waiting for?!  Go buy some wooden crates and your favorite spray paint color because it’s time to organize your closets!!

Thank you so much Crates and Pallets for supplying me with the crates needed to organize Connor’s closet.  I’m a huge fan of Crates and Pallets!  Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest for more awesome projects you can make with wooden crates.

  1. This is a really good idea. We have enough space on the bottom of my daughters closest to do something like this. I like the idea of being able to see and not in a bin. I have some of her stuff in bins and I am constantly trying to refold and separate things. I like how you gave them a hint of color as well.
