Getting Organized

Last week was my first full week of summer vacation and since my goal is to clean out closets and get organized, I decided it was best not to procrastinate.

I started with the laundry room.  It is actually more like a closet so at least it isn't a big area.  A few months ago I removed the one wood shelf and added two of the white wire shelves that can be adjusted.  This added some much needed storage.  But then I quickly found that I just filled these shelves with more junk and I still couldn't find stuff when I needed it.

I decided to add some canisters to the shelf using shower hooks so I could drop stuff in and then easily reach in when I needed it.  I was originally going to reuse coffee cans but then my husband wanted to use them in our garage for something (who knows what for??).

I went to the Dollar Store and found the canisters and shower hooks so it was an inexpensive storage solution.  I drilled a hole through one side of the canister about 1 inch down from the rim.  Then I just put the shower hooks through the hole and around the wire shelf.  Super fast and easy!

I've already decided I can use one for loose change and stuff I find in our pockets.  The other one is empty for now but I'm sure I won't have any problem filling it with stuff.

We have these shelves in all our closets so I'm definitely going to be adding more of these.   I have plenty of shower hooks left so I just need to save my empty coffee cans or go back to The Dollar Store.

I also bought some shoe organizers because I love the idea of using them to organize the small stuff.
I put one in my guest bedroom closet to organize all my craft stuff.  I had plenty ofpockets left over to store random junk I had in the closet.  Now I can easily find and grab stuff that I need.

I just wish I would've done this years ago.  It is such a quick and easy way to organize things.

I found this shoe organizer at The Dollar Store (can't beat the price!) and decided to hang it from hooks in my kitchen pantry.  I now use it to store all my little packages like spices, popcorn, hot chocolate, etc.  This actually freed up so much space in my pantry because I was able to throw away all the boxes that held the individual packages.

So at least I can cross a few things off my summer to-do list.  Now we are off to relax at the beach!

What are some creative ways you stay organized?  I'd love to hear from you.

Magnetic Bookmarks

Summer vacation has begun and I have a huge stack of books to read!  My friend Melissa's daughter had the cutest bookmark that was my inspiration for this project.

It was a magnetic bookmark with her initial on it that I thought was the cutest thing so of course I had to try and make one.
I decided to make mine using a few of my favorite pictures and some old save-the-date magnets I still had on my refrigerator so the project was completely free.  Definitely my kind of project!
Materials needed to make magnetic photo bookmarks:
  • Two pictures
  • Magnet sheet
  • Clear contact paper or packing tape
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
Directions:
I started by opening up a new PowerPoint presentation (I use PowerPoint because I don't have photoshop.  I'm sure if you have photoshop you can create much cuter stuff).  I made my slides 2 x 2.5 and uploaded the pictures that I wanted to use.  I cropped the pictures and added a purple text box with the saying "Enjoying the Sweet Life!"  Of course, you can add any saying or quote you want.  Then just print the pictures onto photo paper.  This way they printed out to the size I wanted them to be.
Cut out the two pictures.  Then cut the magnets to the same size as the pictures.
Adhere the pictures to the magnets using double-sided tape.
Place the two pieces face down on the contact paper or packing tape so that the top of the two pictures are in the center.  Make sure to leave a little space so it bends easily.  I then placed a small strip of contact paper on the back side so it wouldn't still to the pages of the book.

Cut off the extra contact paper/packing tape that is around the magnets.

Fold over and admire your fabulous new bookmark.  I love how the magnets keep the book mark in place.

So easy to make!  I can't wait to make them as gifts.

I even had time to make one for my mom using pictures of the grandchildren.
Enjoy making some fun personalized bookmarks!

Bath Scrub Shower Favor

Have I told you all that I love making shower favors?  I love coming up with fun and practical shower favors so when my friend told me she was hosting a baby shower this weekend, I had to help her make them.

I've loved seeing all the homemade beauty products throughout blogland so I immediately told her we had to make body scrub.
After looking around at different recipes online, we actually ended up keeping it very simple.  There really are so many to choose from but we needed to keep it cheap and easy.

After mixing up a few sample batches using different ingredients, this is what we came up with:

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups epson salt
  • 3 tablespoons baby oil
  • 8-10 drops of essential oil - We used tropical from Michaels and it smells so good!
  • Jars
  • Food coloring (optional)
Directions:
  • Mix everything together in a bowl and fill the jars.  Quick and easy!!
  • We added blue food coloring because her friend is having a boy (I'm sure you guessed that).
We wanted a cute poem to go along with the body scrub that reminded the mother-to-be and guests to pamper themselves.  This is what I came up with:
We cut out the tags and placed them between the lid and metal screw band of the canning jars.  We also added simple direction labels to the bottom of the jars that said:

    Tropical Body Scrub
To use:  Apply to wet skin.  Rub and rinse
Leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth!

We are so pleased with the way they turned out.  We've tested them out and they really work!!  My skin feels so soft and the tropical scent smells so good.
If you need a quick, easy and inexpensive shower favor and/or gift idea, you have to make this body scrub.  We got all of our supplies at Walmart and Michaels for less than $20.

    Pillow Fight for a Cause

One of my favorite blogs, Ladybird Ln, has a fantastic contest going on right now!
    Ladybird Ln
You can link up any pillow project that you've completed lately.  Everyone who enters is asked to also donate a pillowcase to a local hospital or women's shelter.  You can also send it to them and they will donate it to Primary Children's Hospital.

What an awesome contest!!  I get to be creative and help a wonderful cause.  I'm inspired to work on a  new throw pillow just so I can enter the contest.  I'm also excited to make and donate a fun, bright pillowcase.

I hope you're inspired to be crafty and creative so you can enter the Pillow Fight for a Cause.

Stop by and show Ladybird Ln some love.  They highlight a different charity every month.  How fabulous is that?

    Monster Spray

Is your child afraid of monsters? If so, then you need Monster Spray!!
Lately Connor has been complaining about monsters in his room at night. I'm not sure if he has made this up so he can stay up later or if he is really afraid. Either way, I decided to make monster spray.

I took my weekly trip to Michaels and found some cute monster stickers. I took an old Glade spray bottle, peeled of the labels, and decorated the bottle with the monster stickers and some letters I already had.  Then I just added some water to the spray bottle.  You could also add some essential oil if you wanted to add a scent but I didn't.
Now we spray his room every night before we go to bed to keep the monsters away. Connor keeps it on the side of his bunk bed just in case he needs it in the middle of night.

It seems to be working. So if your child is complaining of being afraid of monsters, maybe you need some monster spray also:)

    Giveaway - Boon Inc.

I love finding companies that offer kid friendly products that both children and parents will enjoy. Boon Inc. does just that!
Boon inc. offers fun and innovative bath, feeding and organizational products that children will love and parents will appreciate. As I browsed through their website I’m ecstatic to share a few of the fabulous products they have to offer.
I first heard of Boon when I received the Frog Pod Toy Scoop as a baby shower gift.  I've used it on a regular basis for over two years now and couldn't imagine bath time without it.  It makes bath clean up easy and it provides a very convenient way to store all the bath toys we have.

We were fortunate enough to be sent the Creature Bath Toy Cup Set to review and it could not have come at a better time.  Lately it has been a fight to get Connor to take a bath.  I can’t get him away from his Power Rangers and Super Heroes.

As soon as we received the package (at 4:00 in the afternoon), Connor immediately wanted to take a bath.  He absolutely loves playing with them in the tub.

    I love this!!

I will be ordering this Stash Multi-Room Organizer. I love the idea of using this to organize all of Connor’s art supplies and using it to organize some of my craft supplies.  I could also use it to organize stuff in the bathroom. I might have to order a few.

Boon’s products build creativity and fuel imagination. They are also durable, well designed and very convenient. We’ve had the frog pod for almost three years and it still looks brand new.   Most importantly, they help simplify the lives of parents.

I’m a huge fan of their amazing products and I know you will be also; if you aren’t already.

You will definitely want to follow Boon for all of their latest products and specials on Facebook and Twitter.

Boon has generously offered to give one Happy Go Lucky reader their very own Creatures Bath Toy Cup Set.

    To enter this giveaway:
Check out all the fabulous products Boon Inc. offers and tell me another product you would love to have.

You have until Friday, July 1st at 11:59 p.m. EST to enter.  Please include your email address with each comment so I can let you know if you are the winner (open to US residents only).

Good luck and thanks for stopping by.  I Hope everyone is having a great week!

I received these products for review purposes only.   The views and opinions expressed on this blog are purely my own.

    Dangling Discs Necklace

One of my favorite things to do is make jewelry and I don’t do it as much as I would like.  So when I took the 30 Days of Creativity challenge, I decided to focus on making some new jewelry.
When I recently came across a Dangling Discs necklace at Ann Taylor Loft, I thought to myself “I have to make that!”

I already had all the supplies I needed except the small silver discs.  I looked on Etsy under supplies and found them on One Dollar Shop for $1.  You can’t beat that!!

Materials needed to make your very own necklace:
    • Chain – I used two different kinds because I wanted to use up what I had.  One had larger links than the other.
    • Jump rings
    • Small metal discs with a top hole
    • 1 clasp – Optional depending on how long you want your necklace
    • Pliers – You can use craft pliers or any type of pliers.  I actually use two pairs to hold and separate the jump rings and chain links.  It makes it easier to hold the small pieces.
    • Optional – Metal decorative charms ( I added these for texture and design purposes.)
**I got all of my supplies at Michaels except the discs.
      Photobucket
Directions to make your very own Dangling Discs Necklace:

      Step 1:
Measure how long you want your necklace to be.  I wanted mine to be 32 inches.  Then measure your chain.  Use your pliers to separate the links to shorten the chain.

      Step 2: (Optional)
Add a clasp to one end of the chain using a jump ring.  If your links are small, add a jump ring to the other end of the chain so the clasp can hook on.  If you want your necklace long than you don’t really need a clasp.  You can just join the two ends of the chain together using a jump ring.

      Step 3:
Start adding jump rings to your metal discs.  The best way to do this is to twist the jump rings slightly instead of pulling the rings apart.  This will make it easier to close and attach to the chain.

      Step 4:
Add your discs to the chain by attaching the jump rings to the links of the chain.  You can do this in any order, pattern, design that you want.
      ·       I started by putting 1 disc in the very center of the chain then placed 3 discs before and after the center disc.
      ·       Then I clustered discs together randomly up the two sides of the chain.  I used 28 discs altogether.

      Step 5:  Optional
I decided to add some small metal charms that look like flowers.  You don’t have to do this.  I just did it because I already had the small charms and thought it would be a nice little addition.  The necklace looked just as good without these small charms.

      Final Step:
Put on your fabulous new Dangling Discs Necklace and enjoy all the wonderful compliments you get.  Then when someone asks where you bought it, you get to say that you made it yourself!!
I was able to finish this necklace while watching a movie with my wonderful husband so it can be done in less than two hours.

I hope this inspires you to make your own necklace.  Please leave a comment if you use these directions to make a similar necklace.  Also, I would love to see jewelry you’ve made recently so leave a link with a comment below so I can check out your fabulous creations.
