Jewelry Holder

This is one of those projects that just comes together and I never could have planned for it to turn out so easy.  The best part was I found all the materials around the house!
I've been planning to make a jewelry holder using an old picture frame for a few months but I couldn't find a good place in my bedroom to hang it.  Then, I came across some fabulous Jewelry holders that Decor-ganize Crafts posted on her blog and I was inspired!  She created Pedestal Jewelry Holders and I realized that is exactly what I needed so I could keep it on my dreser.

I had to start looking for my materials.
I started rummaging through my craft closet to see what had.  I found an extra candle stick that I knew would make the perfect base.  Then, while looking through our tool box for a large screw to attach the candlestick to the frame, I found this weird bracket (my husband says that it's a speaker bracket so I'm not sure what is holding our speaker to the wall in the living room).
After removing the top part of the candlestick, the bracket screwed perfectly into the candlestick.  This was total luck!!
I was then able to use small screws to attach the bracket to the side of the frame.
Before attaching the frame to the candlestick base, I attached the screen.  My neighbor had left over screen that I was able to use (she's an awesome neighbor).  I used my staple gun to attach the screen

I screwed in hooks to the side and bottom for necklaces, bracelets and hoop earrings.

Finally, I spray painted it black.
I just love the way it turned out!  The best part was I had all the materials and I was able to reuse random stuff I already had into a fabulous new Pedestal Jewelry Holder.

Now I can keep my jewelry organized and display it neatly on my dresser.

I'm really surprised at how much it holds.  I think I might have to go and buy some new jewelry this weekend:)

30 Days of Creativity

I came across this great website this week that challenges you to create something every day for the month of June.
I've decided I'm going to do it.  Their website, 30 Days of Creativity, has all the information if you are interested in the challenge or want to learn more about it.

I'm especially excited because summer vacation starts soon so Connor and I can spend our days being creative and making things together.  It can be a craft, recipe, etc. I better get organized and start thinking of what we can make so I'm prepared by June 1st.

Anyone interested in doing this with me?

Blog Swap - Decor-ganize Crafts

I love finding new blogs, so when I found Decor-ganize Crafts I was delighted.
I'm so inspired by all of Heather's great ideas and tutorials. I know you will love her and all her fabulous ideas also so I'm thrilled to swap blogs with Heather today.

I'm so flattered that Kara asked me to do a blog swap with her!
This is my very first blog swap!
A little about me...
My husband and I bought our first house a few years back in real rough condition (I'm surprised it wasn't condemned yet!). We've been restoring and redecorating one project at a time. My fave part is when I get to decorate and organize. All of the projects have been DIYer's on a very small budget. I'm constantly trying to find ways to simplify or beautify something in my home. If there's an area that drives me crazy, or is just a little annoying, I try to think of how I can make it even better!
Once my home was in better living conditions we were finally blessed with a little girl. Being very lucky I became a stay at  home mom. I then started to have a "craft itch".
(I'm sure that most mom's get this "craft itch" too).
I love looking at craft blogs for ideas. I am really drawn to crafts that not only decorates, but also organizes. I LOVE to organize too because it gives me a sense of control.
I started to compile the ideas I saw on blogs in a folder on my computer.
After awhile of collecting crafts I wanted to try, I  started to get a few of my own ideas.
I thought it would be fun to share it with others.
 Thus, Decor-ganize Crafts was born.
Decor-ganize Crafts is a blog that focuses on crafts that organizes AND decorates. Pretty much anything that could make our lives a little more simple and beautiful.
Some of my projects include...
On a regular basis I also love to feature other's great ideas from their blogs too!
I'd love for you to come check it out.
Thanks for reading!

Cute Baby Socks

I was inspired to make these adorable fabric flower socks this weekend.  I saw them at one of my favorite little shops along the beach and immediately had to come home and make them.
All you do is make your favorite fabric flower and attach it to the toe of any baby sock.  The pictures don't really do them any justice because they are super cute.  Maybe it's because I'm obsessed with fabric flowers and would put them on everything!
I'm so excited to make these as gifts for all my friends who are having girls.

Have a great week!

Book Ledges - Knock Off

When I first saw these book ledges in The Land of Nod catalog I knew I wanted them for Connor's playroom. I love the fact that you can see the front of the books instead of just the spines.
The Land of Nod's Book Ledges - $20 Each

The Book Ledges I Built for under $30
I was a little disappointed when I realized that they were out of stock so I knew I had to make them myself.  And I'm so glad I did considering I was able to make three shelves for less than $30.

The first step was to measure the space.  I decided I wanted mine to be 38 inches long.  The best part of making them myself was the fact that I could customize the length.

I went to Home Depot and had my wood cut.  This is what I got to make my three shelves:
  • 6 - 1 x 3 @ 38 inches long
  • 3 - 1 x 2 @ 38 inches long
Each shelf requires two 1 x 3's and one 1 x 2 .  I got the cheapest wood since I was planning on painting the shelves.

Now we don't own any fancy tools or gadgets.  I found a few tutorials online but they all required special drill bits and other items I didn't have.  To keep this easy and cheap, I knew I had to figure out a way to build the shelves with only my drill or screwdriver.

I found these brackets in one of the aisles at Home Depot and decided to use them to attach my pieces of wood together.
I bought three packs of the corner brackets and three packs of the flat brackets - one pack for each shelf.  They come 4 in a pack.

I laid one of the 1 x 3's flat on the ground and took the other 1 x 3 and lined it up to the back edge to make an L shape.  I fastened them together using three corner brackets:  left, middle, and right.  The L brackets are on the back of the shelves so you won't see them.

Then I put the 1 x 2 in the front.  I attached the front piece of wood using the flat brackets.  These are screwed in the bottom of the shelf so you won't see these either.  I screwed the flat brackets in two places.

For extra support and since I had extra, I added a flat bracket to the side of each shelf.  You can't even see these after I painted the shelves.
I just hung the shelves using my drill and painted them white.

I'm actually very pleased with the end result.  They look very nice with all the books on them.  The best part has been watching Connor just go up and start reading his books.
I also love that the books look like art work on the wall.

So with a few pieces of wood, a drill and some brackets you can build your own book ledges also!!  And instead of paying $20 for each shelf, you can do it for less than $30.

That means it is time to order some fun, new books for Connor.

I hope this inspires you to build your own book ledges.  Have a great week!!

Graduation Subway Art

It is graduation time and to honor all the fabulous graduates, I created a motivational subway art printable.

This subway art can be used as a centerpiece for the graduation party you are planning and then given to the graduate as a keepsake.  It prints out best as an 8 x 10 but can also be printed out smaller and used to make a cute graduation card.

You can print out your copy HERE.

I also thought it would be fun to create a Graduation Subway Art Placemat.  Just save the PDF file to a jump drive and take it to your local office store.  It should be printed on 11 x 17 paper.  Then have it laminated.  You can create this placemate for less than $5 and make your Grad feel extra special!!

If you make your own Graduation Subway Art I would love to see it so be sure to leave a comment below with your link.

I hope everybody has a great week!

First Blog Swap

I'm so excited to be doing my first blog swap today with Christina from Mrs. O's Life.

You're going to love her blog!!  She has fabulous Popular Posts of the Week that are so much fun to participate in.  Show her some love and check her out!

First I want to thank Kara for doing a feature swap with me... she did not have to offer to do that so again thank you Kara.  This was extra sweet of you.  Okay so a little about me: I am a wife to Mr. O, a mommy to Cupcake, a military wife, a sister, a daughter, a grand-daughter, a niece, a cousin, a cyster.... I am many things. But more than anything I am a wanna be stay at home mom.... who is more determined than ever to fulfill this obsession.

I was diagnosed in 2003 with PCOS, which has tried to rob me of my dream of being a stay at home mom, but I am on a mission to fight PCOS.  All while being or trying to be ;) a domestic diva ... My adventures are little crazy at times as I try to conceive naturally coupled with faith all while keeping my sanity about me as I strive to be the wife my military man deserves.  Crazy or not it's what works for me and I promise to love every minute [or pretend too, lol].

I hope you will stop by and follow my on my adventures... cause I love making new blog friends.  I always follow those who follow me.  Hope to meet you soon.
